The Aosta Valley region offers a varied panorama for sports fishing enthusiasts, from the Dora Baltea, which flows through the central valley, to the clear streams flowing through the side valleys, to the Alpine lakes. There are many lakes and streams in the region where it is possible to fish with the relevant fishing regimes. In addition to ‘open waters’, there are also consortium-run fishing reserves, private fishing reserves and no-kill zones.

Fly fishing is a type of sport fishing so defined because special artificial baits are used, constructed in imitation, in all their phases of development and life, of insects that are born, develop, reproduce and die in the aquatic environment, but also insects known as terrestrial. In each case, the bait is called a ‘fly’ while also imitating other creatures on which the fish feed.

It is carried out with equipment consisting of a rod of different lengths and materials, a fly fishing reel (called a ‘tail box’), a line of decreasing diameter (called a ‘rat tail’) and various accessories to support the angler. This equipment is necessary to be able to cast the sometimes very lightly weighted artificial lure several metres away by means of casting techniques aimed at the best possible placement of the artificial lure in often rough waters. A tapered nylon line of variable length is tied to the rat tail depending on the type of lure and length of the rod, as well as the fishing environment
